Eero designed the chairs first in the mid 50’s and then the table in the early 60’s. Shortly after the series was recognized with design awards from The Design Center Stuggart in 1962, the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, and the Federal Design Award for industrial art in 1969. The Tulip chair is renown for its futuristic curves. Between 1966 and 1969 it was also popularized further by its display on the bridge of Gene Rodenberry’s Star Trek. Today, it is widely recognized as the modern classic icon in dining. Clean, modern classics. Reproductions when made of fiberglass and cast aluminum, like the original, last generations.
Many of the original Tulip Table sets, which were all made of fiberglass, are still in use today. Before even going into production, Eero realized that while this ensured absolute color and sheen consistency, the fiberglass base would not support the table. He then switched to a Cast Aluminum base. Experimenting with Rilsan type coating over the aluminum, he was able to achieve the coordinating gloss and color of the fiberglass. Like the original production the Kardiel reproduction seat cushion is made of wool. This is worth noting as the majority of reproductions in the Tulip Series, craft the body of the chairs of plastic and cover the cushion in synthetic fabric.
Dimensions to materials, Kardiel’s reproduction respects the exact design and material content of the original. The Kardiel chairs, like the original, feature pure solid white molded fiberglass shells that rest on a aluminum cast base. Nearly all reproductions of the Tulip series today are constructed from ABS plastic. With ongoing use, plastic chairs break at stress points under weight. While actual fiberglass Tulip chairs do cost more than plastic, you may find the difference is not significant. The real difference is found in longevity and appearance. Fiberglass, it’s what the originals wore.
Cashmere wool fiber is obtained from “Cashmere goats.” Historically, fine-haired Cashmere goats have been called Capra hircus laniger, as if they were a subspecies of the domestic goat Capra Hircus. Cashmere goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine, soft undercoat or under-down of hair mingled with a straighter and much coarser outer coating of hair called Guard Hair. For the fine under-down to be sold and processed further, it must be de-haired. De-hairing is a mechanical process that separates the coarse hairs from the fine hair. After this separating process the resulting premium “cashmere” is ready to be dyed and converted into yarn.
